The paper describes a structure for the NUCLEUS of a real-time process-control operating system. Basic operating system capabilities and services are described. Synchronization and message passing is accomplished by using semaphores. Each NUCLEUS module is described by narrative and flowcharts. The NUCLEUS has been implemented and tested on an SEL 86 real-time computer. Flowcharts and module description are included in this report. Complete documentation for the NUCLEUS consists of this report, along with assembly listings and approximately 4,000 punched cards furnished under separate cover. Other user oriented information about the NUCLEUS will appear later in a Users Manual.
