Abstract:
Graphite sandwich panels are less damage resistant than S-glass panels. An order of magnitude higher energy level was required to sustain the same relative damage level in S-glass as in graphite panels. Panel failure characteristics suggest that this lower impact resistance is due to low strain to fracture of graphite composites. Local core crushing occurred in all tests, and all graphite panels tested exhibited fiber fracture and permanent indentation at low energy levels. Core stiffness was the only other test parameter except face sheet material which had a significant effect on impact resistance. Author, modified-PL
