Abstract:

The current technical literature, as it relates to simulators, training devices, and simulation in technical training is reviewed. Rules and principles for the cost-effective application of simulation are also included. A major finding is that fidelity can be quite low in certain procedural tasks without a decrement in performance. Other studies indicated that some complex electronic equipment can be simulated in simple, relatively inexpensive devices without having an adverse effect on training. In general, very few studies have been completed to validate the rules and principles of simulation that were developed over 20 years ago.
