Abstract:

The SQOC Code, a two-dimensional hydrocynamic FORTRAN Code designed to compute the hydrodynamics of an unsteady detonation wave, has been evaluated for use on the BRLESC2 computer at the Ballistic Research Laboratories BRL as a tool in the study of the detonation of real explosive materials. An analysis of the results indicated that the mesh spacing must be less than 0.05 cm in order to obtain accurate results. With this mesh size, a charge 1.0 cm in radius and 2.0 cm long requires 48000 words of high speed memory 48K and 40 minutes or more of machine time. Problems using more than 48K memory were not run because of a long time delay between calculations. A failure diameter for a particular type of cast TNT was obtained through experiment and computation with inconsistent results. As a result, the code in its present form is not recommended for use at the BRL.
