The BRL expansion tube has been modified by the insertion of a nozzle plate immediately downstream of the second diaphragm with the purpose of improving reproducibility and uniformity of test flows. Results of experiments in the modified expansion tube are reported for a nozzle plate with square nozzles into which the second diaphragm petals under action of the shock wave produced by the opening of the first diaphragm. This nozzle plate was designed as an improvement on one with counter-bored conical nozzles already in use. The influence of a nozzle plate on the expansion tube cycle is examined. Comparisons are made between the new nozzle plate and the earlier one. Results of a comprehensive set of computations for the modified expansion tube are presented, with emphasis on flow properties in the test section computations are compared with experimental results.
