Using the apparatus of partial differential equations the authors show that a cloud layer in which the solid state is formed as a result of the freezing of cloud droplets undergoes free oscillations. The physical nature of these oscillations may be related both to the effect of the ice particles on the activation of the condensation nuclei and the dependence of the probability of freezing on the dimensions of the drops. The authors also show that the microstructure of the cloud and the precipitation rate change periodically over time.
