The study was an attempt to characterize the average volunteer with respect to ability and personality and compare him with the average soldier from a general military population. Statistically significant differences can be demonstrated. In the case of ability there is no question that the typical Edgewood volunteer is superior however, in the case of personality profiles the differences are small and clinically unremarkable. The implications of the findings are discussed. Several studies have been conducted suggesting the influence of these variables on drug effects but more work is necessary to quantitate such relationships.
