Abstract:

Heart rate, pulmonary ventilation, and oxygen intake were measured in one man before, during, and after two minutes of work on the cycle ergometer 200 watts and 60 revolutions per minute while supine and while upright. Inhalation of amyl nitrite for about 30 seconds before or immediately after the onset of work had no significant effect on the time course of oxygen intake during work. The sensations and circulatory changes associated with the inhalation of amyl nitrite did not affect the performance of work on the cycle ergometer.
