A stepwise regression analysis was used to develop four mathematical models representing the sound speed in the upper 500 meters of the Mediterranean Sea. The polynomial expressions were a function of latitude, longitude, depth and temperature and were based on historical data in the area. The standard deviation of the difference between predicted and observed sound speeds ranged from 0.154 msec to 0.294 msec for the four models. The difference between predicted and observed sound speeds was not found to adversely affect the propagation losses and range predictions for sonar modeling. It is concluded that the accuracy and simplicity of these models makes them well suited for surveillance applications, sonar modeling, on-board prediction, and information retrieval systems.
