In forming an iron-nickel storage battery with nonlamellar negative electrode, it is found that discharge at 0.8-0.9 V accelerates and improves the quality of forming of the batteries. By changing the final discharge voltage during forming and in the initial period of operation, thus manipulating the Fe0 to FeII and FeII to FeIII anode processes, results in production of the rated capacity in the storage batteries.
