This memorandum tests the thermodynamic assumptions inherent in the conclusion that the martensitic transformation in equiatomic NiTi is thermoelastic. The thermomechanical and thermodynamic results are found to support such a conclusion, and it is shown that the heat of transformation and temperature of transformation both increase with increased strain. Thermally cycling thermoelastic martensites through the transformation lowers both the transformation temperature and heat of transformation, and the lowest value should be considered the heat of transformation of the thermal martensite.
