Thyroid status of 45 albino rats fed a normal diet was studied during 28-day continuous exposure to normal air at 50 ft sea water pressure and to equivalent partial pressure of oxygen at sea level. No changes in 24 hour radioiodine uptake, T3 resin uptake, total serum thyroxine, free thyroxine and chromatographic distribution of tracer radioiodine were associated with experimental conditions. Accidental exposure to severe cold in the control group was followed by marked increase in 24-hour radioiodine uptake, while other parameters remained unchanged. Author
