Abstract:

The force on a small sphere immersed in an oscillating shear flow is investigated, based on Navier-Stokes equations by means of matched asymptotic expansions. Inertia effects introduce a lift force on the sphere directed toward the side of the flow having greater velocity. The effect of the lift on the motion of a small, neutrally buoyant sphere freely suspended in an oscillating flow of small shear rate is examined in detail. The small slip velocity between the sphere and the fluid is calculated and examined as the cause of lift. The drift velocity of a sphere of 200 micrometers in a shear flow oscillating at 1 Hz is estimated. Modified author abstract
