Abstract:

Yttrium orthovanadate YVO4 doped with rare earth ions was investigated for use as a pulse pumped Q-switched laser material. Two laser ions were studied in detail neodymium Nd3 and holmium Ho3 sensitized with erbium and thulium. Measurements of the optical absorption and emission spectra, energy levels and stimulated emission cross-sections are reported. Crystal growth and laser performance are discussed.
