The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment and rehabilitation aspects of the US Armys Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, with primary emphasis on the alcohol program. The total number of excessive drinkers in the Army was estimated to be about 140,000 enlisted men and 10,000 officers. Drug use was found to be almost entirely limited to E1 - E5 grades, about 24 percent of whom reported an expenditure for nonmedicinal drugs other than marijuana in the preceding pay period. About 40 percent of E1 - E5 grades reported using marijuana on more than an experimental basis.
