An Experimental Determination of the Cavitation Limit of Acoustic Power at Depths to 100 Meters.

An experimental determination of the maximum acoustic power density which can be transmitted into sea water without cavitation at depths to 100 meters is described. The transmission was by an array of 6 transducers of 2.22 cm diameter and consisted of 200 ms duration pulses formed by gating a 30 kHz oscillator. The results show that the power density to cause cavitation is significantly less than that predicted by a simple theory.
