A photometric technique for determining the visual range at night has been developed at the Ballistic Research Laboratories BRL in support of the Army Materiel Command AMC Target Signature Analysis Program and other related tasks. From measurements of the luminance of and the forwardscatter from a large uniform light source, the visual range can be calculated. The value of the visual range shortly after sunset based on the nighttime method is compared with the visual range obtained near sunset based on a daytime method. The error for the nighttime method, using the daytime value as the reference, is about 10 percent for visual ranges varying from 1.5 to 57 kilometres.
