Abstract:

A method is described for evaluating the impact history of aircrew protective helmets. Of 30 helmets randomly selected it was concluded that 40 had contributed to a reduction in head injury and had probably been life saving. There was a reasonable correlation between estimated impact energy and head injury, but that between estimated transmitted force and head injury was less satisfactory, presumably due to the non-representative dynamic behaviour of current headforms.
