Abstract:
The work on undercooled copper ingots containing up to 0.1 wt sulphur has been expanded to include up to 0.6 wt S. This has shown that marked grain refinement may occur at undercoolings of less than 70C and greater than 100C only coarse-grained structures were found at the intermediate undercoolings 70-100C. Re-examination of some other alloy systems shows that this lack of grain refinement at intermediate undercoolings is a common feature. An examination of these new results, together with the previously published results, gives further support to the finding that solute concentration is of major importance in grain refinement by undercooling, and shows that there is a general pattern to the effects of undercooling on grain refinement.
