The election of Salvador Allende as President of Chile brought a Socialist government into power through a democratic process. Faced with political opposition, Allende proceeded to implement his Socialist policies of land reform, nationalization of foreign industry, and increasing the status and well-being of the lower classes. This caused an equal, opposite reaction from the middle-class Chileans and created enormous economic problems for his government. There was a polarization created between the classes of people and inflation increased at gigantic, uncontrolled rates. The normally quiescent military eventually was persuaded by the opposition that there was a constitutional crisis, and they removed Allende by force. The events that brought about this action by the military are discussed. Modified author abstract
