The paper gives conditions under which a formally self-adjoint second-order elliptic differential operator R sup m has a unique self-adjoint extension. The major conditions on the coefficients are imposed only in an increasing sequence of shell-like regions surrounding the origin, and the link with the quantum-mechanical interpretation in the case of the Schrodinger operator is discussed.
