The correlation between the rate of fatigue crack growth and the stress-intensity factor seems to be well established in the linear elastic range where the size of the plastic zone is small relative to other critical dimensions. However, for large scale yielding in the elastic-plastic region as well as for fully plastic behavior, crack growth relationships have as yet not been as well established. It is the purpose of the present paper to explore possible analytical expressions for fatigue crack growth for such cases involving large-scale plasticity effects. The approach is based upon the use of an assumed relationship between the crack opening displacement as given by Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden and the rate of fatigue crack growth.
