Abstract:
The regulating outlet, stilling basin, and exit channel for Cougar Dam were studied in a 125-scale, fixed-bed model that reproduced a portion of the upper pool, 1057 ft of 13.5-ft-diam tunnel, the chute, stilling basin, and approximately 1100 ft of river bed and pertinent overbank topography downstream from the stilling basin. The purpose of this study was to check the adequacy of the original design and to develop modifications that would improve hydraulic efficiency or reduce construction costs. Elements subject to modification were the regulating outlet tunnel, tunnel outlet, chute, stilling basin, and outlet channel.
