Abstract:
A three-bay-wide section of the approach channel, spillway and stilling basin, and exit area was reproduced in a 140-scale model. Pressures along the center line of a typical spillway bay were satisfactory, but cavitation damage adjacent to stop-log slots in the crest piers was indicated. The spillway design discharge of 850 000 cfs was passed over the crest under a head of 55.5 ft the computed head was 55.4 ft. Spillway capacity at normal pool elev 440.0 was 684 000 cfs. Use of a sharper exponential curve on the crest pier noses improved but did not eliminate low pressures in the stop-log slots and on adjacent crest areas during the project design discharge. The two pier shapes tested had no significant effect on spillway capacity.
