The seismicity and earthquake mechanism of the Atlantic Ocean north of Iceland is discussed. It is demonstrated that the surface wave method can be extended to small earthquakes using known fault plane solutions in the region as reference events. The outcome of these studies - Rayleigh and Love dispersion, attenuation, focal depth, seismic moment and focal mechanism - can be useful quantities for discussing the tectonics of the North Atlantic.
