Abstract:
The NATO Reference Mobility Model NRMM is a simulation tool used to compare vehicle design candidates and to assess the mobility of existing vehicles under specific conditions. NRMM was developed and validated in the 1970s and computer technology and models have advanced greatly since then. The AVT-248 team provided a basis to update and improve NRMM with physics-based models to replace the empirical data used in NRMM. The proposed result is the Next-Generation NRMM NG-NRMM. The deliverables from AVT-248 include simple and complex terramechanics prototype demonstrations, a Verification and Validation benchmarking exercise, and the initial release of a STANREC documenting the requirements for an NG-NRMM. In addition, two complementary Research Task Groups were spun off as new activities a Cooperative Demonstration of Technology AVT-308 and an RTG to upgrade and manage the STANREC AVT-327. NG-NRMM is vital to NATOs mission as it will add new capabilities in the design, modeling, and simulation of a broad class of vehicles, with the potential to reduce costs and improve performance. This could yield a new paradigm for ground vehicle mobility with the possibility to model complex vehicle maneuvers in high fidelity.
