Abstract:
The formation of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response SPMAGTF-CR was born of the need to meet the current New Normal threat in Africa. Although similar to the Small Wars era of the early 20th century, the New Normal has unique characteristics that present a distinctive challenge to the U.S. military in general, and the Marine Corps specifically, as the United States de facto crisis response force. In light of the complex threats and organizations on the African continent and in the wake of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, SPMAGTF-CR-AF was created. While it has performed well in its assigned role, it has not yet met the vision and guidance set forth by EF-21.
