When casting high-manganese, high-aluminum steels, the design of the casting molds and fluxes requires special consideration. Conventional low-alloy steel fluxes can react strongly with high-alloy content in the melt and cause variation in the resulting ingot composition. Casting mold size should also be considered due to segregation during solidification. This report reviews considerations for successful casting of industrial-scale ingots of high-manganese, high-aluminum steel alloys available in public domain literature.
