Abstract:

As the UnitedStates reorients itself towardsto aperiod ofreduced military capacity and away from largefootprint military engagements, there is an imperative tokeep commanders and decisionmakers mentally sharp and prepared for the next hot spot. One potential hot spot, megacities, presents a unique set of challenges due to their expansive, often interwoven ethnographic landscapes, and their overall lack of understanding by many western experts. Social simulation using agentbased models is one approach for furthering our understanding of distant societies and their security implications, and for preparing leaders to engage these populations if and when the need arises.
