Abstract:

Transmission line seals in three sizes 14, 38, and 34 were constructed at the Naval Research Laboratory and subjected totests to determine their suitability for use in the Naval Service.Reference a requested information and data on seals for 78 line .Glass sealing alloy tubing suitable for construction of 7811 trans-- mission line seals was not obtainable except by special order andpayment of tool costs. Therefore no Seals of this size were tested.A pair of 1411 and 3811 seals were attached to 20-foot lengths of 1 4 and 38tr line respectively, the lines filled with dry nitrogenand sealed. At the end of the test period, these lines were subjectedto several temperature cycles. Seals were tested for leaks over aperiod of approximately eight weeks. Further, they were subjectedto standard vibration and shock tests after which they were againexamined for gas leakage.
