A variety of commercial photographic and x-ray films were exposed under conditions simulating actual shipping conditions at several distances from a standard 250 milligram radium capsule enclosed in its lead carrying case. The exposure required in each case to produce a density gain of 0.07 were determined and a table was constructed giving the permissible transit times for each kind of film when 15 feet from the radium unit. These value are at the least several times those permitted for the same conditions by present railway express regulations.
