Abstract:

This report reviews the use of multiple robot arms in additive manufacturing AM for the purpose of identifying research gaps relevant to the Armys Convergent Manufacturing Science and Technology Strategy. Use of multiple robot arms for AM in published literature includes fixed printers, swarm printers, robot arms with a movable build plate, hybrid AM, and software tools. The technology has proven to be very useful in reducing build times, improving surface resolution, and reducing the need for support structures. However, the review concludes that there are gaps in the research that must be addressed for the Army to meet its objectives in convergent manufacturing.
