This study investigated the potential benefits of encoding unmanned aircraft system motion imagery using the free and open source AOMedia Video 1 AV1 standard in place of the existing H.264MPEG-4 AVC andH.265HEVC codecs. At the time of this study, there were no commercially available AV1 hardware encoders, so the study compares the libaom-av1 encoder, as contained in FFmpeg, and the Main Concept H.264 andH.265 software encoders. The Triangle Orientation Discrimination TOD method was used to measure performance in previous H.264 codec analyses, and to compare the encoders. Rather than using human observers, this study used a Human Visualization System HVS model to automate testing. The results from the study show that AV1 shows promise of outperforming both H.264 and H.265 but will require more testing once hardware is available.
