Abstract:

The overall objective of this study is to understand the true atomic structure of marginal glass forming alloys and predict their devitrification behavior. In that sense the proposed work here involves i the chemical and structural ordering in marginally amorphous solids and their liquids with ii selection dynamics and evolution of structure at various length scales during nanocrystallization. This proposal seeks to combine experiment and computation to answer the following fundamental questions1 What is the true atomic structure of a marginal metallic glass2 What is the role of ordering of the liquid as it is deeply undercooled and what effect that has on glass formation3 What is the interplay between glass structure and nucleation
