Abstract:

Obstructive sleep apnea OSA is a common sleep disorder characterized by partial or complete obstruction of airway during sleep. This results in impaired health and quality life. With limited effective non-surgical treatments for OSA, most patients with OSA eventually need surgical intervention for a complete cure. However, surgical outcomes with OSA are far from satisfactory as the surgical planning is often subjective and based on the experience of the clinical team. In this study, we are developing a software framework to 1 virtually perform different surgeries on a representative anatomical model of the patients airway and 2 evaluate different plans and predict surgical outcomes. At the time of this report, we build basic frame work and integrated tools to extract centerline of the airway anatomy, endoscopic view of the airway, basic tools necessary for virtual surgery, display velocity and pressure data from computational fluid dynamics simulations on the patient scans. We scanned 415 subjects so far. We are working to integrate haptic interface for a more realistic touch-feedback experience during virtual surgery.
