This program aimed to fill the gap in photonic integrated circuit PIC capabilities by developing active wide-bandgap PIC platforms to operate from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectrum. We largely accomplished our goals, as detailed below, using III-nitride materials, most importantly aluminum nitride AlN. Importantly, we designed and fabricated an AlN PIC platform that was then used for transformative experiments including multiphoton correlation spectroscopy with integrated superconducting nanowire detectors and large-scale hybrid integration of quantum artificial atoms.
