Group IV Quantum Dots for Integrated Photonics

Silicon-based electronic computing is running into fundamental limitations related to on-chip communication. Another computing concept that can improve computing performance - as well as reduce their size, weight, and power consumption -is integrated photonics. However, integrated photonic circuits have been challenging to achieve due to the limitations of existing materials. Our team has developed new types of nanostructured Group IV Si-Ge-Sn alloys that could serve as onchip light emitters. We have probed their structural and optical properties using optical spectroscopy, NMR, and diffraction. We demonstrate their potential for integrated photonics by proof-of-concept optoelectronic devices.
