Abstract:
Focus is on the new physics and materials afforded by metasurfaces and in particular on designeractive metasurfaces that are reconfigurabletunable with external control of their optical characteristics, including distinctively quantum properties. Nonconductive oxide and nitride plasmonic metasurfaces and 2D transition metal nitridescarbides, namely MXenes, were developed and a new broadly tunable phase change material SmNiO3 was discovered. Highlights in the Physics are synchrotron radiation from self-acceleration of nonlinear polarization, giant Kerr nonlinearities in ENZ metamaterials, phasematching-free harmonic generation in metasurfaces, Dirac cone and zero index metasurfaces and metasurfaces with exceptional points by topological optimization. NV centers in diamond metasurfaces have shown large enhancement of the Purcell factor. Arbitrary spin to orbital angular momentum conversion has been implemented. High performance monochromatic and broadband achromatic metalenses in the near IR and entire visible have been demonstrated along applications to new depth cameras, spectrometers and endoscopes.
