Abstract:

We have continued to provide strong evidence that SWDs in rats are unrelated to post-traumatic epilepsy PTE, and our data now argue further that the SWDs are not absence seizures instead, they appear to be normal brain oscillations widely present in a variety of common outbred laboratory rats, and even wild-caught rats. We have acquired increasingly strong evidence that early seizures, traditional epileptiform EEG spikes, and spikelets are not reliable PTE biomarkers for both the fluid percussion injury FPI and controlled cortical impact CCI models in rat. With the FPI model, we have obtained our first bona fide spontaneous recurrent seizures that appear to represent a true model of PTE, and these appear to be linked to preinjury stress.
