A Separate Space: Creating a Military Service for Space

The U.S. government has launched a Space Force with the congressional passage and presidential signature of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020.On February 19, 2019, President Donald J. Trump signed a directive ordering the Department of Defense to submit a legislative proposal for the establishment of the U.S. Space Force within the Department of the Air Force as a sixth branch of the armed forces, and Congress has now acted to create the force. To prepare for the new service, the Department of Defense and the Department of the Air Force established the U.S. Space Force Planning Task Force on February 22, 2019, to produce an initial work plan and process.2 The task force approached RAND Project AIR FORCE and requested assistance during this processin particular to help identify what activities should transfer into a newly established Space Force.
