Abstract:
The objective of this proposal is to study phages used in combination with antibiotics to treat biofilm infections. In vitro biofilm assays were completed to assess phage plus antibiotic combinations. Synergistic combinations were found some resulted in reduced biomass of biofilm, others resulted in reduced number of live bacteria in the biofilm. These differences may be due to the mechanism of action of the antibiotics and should be investigated further. These in vitro data suggest that combinations of phage plus antibiotic may reduce biofilm in an in vivo setting. Assessment of synergistic pairs will be completed in animal models during the next funding period.
