Abstract:
Trauma can cause osteoarthritis OA, and since no effective strategies exist to prevent the inflammation and apoptosis that develop, joint injuries from sports or combat almost always develop into OA. Basic studies can help to establish and therapeutically target the progression of traumatic injury into OA, using animal models, in our case the dog. We proposed to use electric fields to direct cartilage precursor cells to OA damage sites, and optimize differentiation there. We also developed matrix components to introduce into the injury site, to further enhance healing, proposing that our strategy could promote healing of cartilage in dogs, and be translatable to humans.
