Abstract:

Research was performed to study the hydrodynamic growth of instabilities seeded by isolated perturbations in targets ablatively accelerated to high velocity. Experiments were performed on the NIKE laser facility at the Naval Research Laboratory NRL which led to improved understanding of isolated perturbation growth and provided a comprehensive data set for simulations by advanced hydrocodes such as NRLs FASTRAD3D. Isolated defects were machined into 40 um polystyrene foils using the NRL femtosecond Swept-Wavelength Optical Resonance-Raman Device SWOrRD. Isolated defects where characterized with microscopy and white light interferometry. This memorandum summarizes the machining results of this research effort.
