The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note CHETN is to introduce a desktop application that can be used as a screening tool to assess the relative contribution of vessel wake energy to erosion as compared to that from currents and tides. The application uses simplified algorithms reported in the literature that predict wake height as a function of vessel speed and other parameters. The tool also estimates the maximum shear stress and energy dissipation, which are used as a proxy for erosion potential. This CHETN presents a brief description of the vessel wake algorithms and then describes the desktop application software to help familiarize the user with the layout and other features. The CHETN concludes with conditional limitations that should be considered before using the application.
