High Reynolds Number Stratified Turbulent Wakes: Internal Wave Energetics, Self-Similarity and Subgrid-Scale Modeling

The work funded by this grant is founded on unique stratified turbulent sphere wake database generated by massively parallel Large Eddy Simulations spanning a range of values of body-based Reynolds, Re, and Froude, Fr, numbers. The flow phenomenology observed with increasing Re indicates that a novel form of persistent, highly-layered, and space-filling turbulence emerges in the late-wake core. In addition to quantifying and parameterizing the characteristics of this layered turbulence, the energetic content, directional preference and along-wake-periphery of wake-radiate internal waves has been systematically studied. Internal waves become a dominant contributor to the wake energy budget, particularly at high Re.
