Abstract:
Naval Surface platforms rely on human operators to interpret data from shipboard sensors and the Global Information Grid GIG in order to initiate actions that safeguard the ship and prosecute threats. The human must respond to information flows by taking appropriate actions. Currently the information flow overwhelms the operators cognitive processing capabilities and the result is suboptimal decision making that can threaten the ship and crew. The goal of the Battle Management Aids and Decision Support BMASED project is to provide a modeling environment that quantifies mission performance as a function of threat lethality. The model identifies bottlenecks and inefficiencies that impede mission performance. The model indicates where artificial intelligence algorithms and machine learning should be introduced in order to increase the efficiency of the kill chain and reduce threat lethality.
