Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom have seen increased casualties surviving historically lethal injuries. Thoracic injuries are particularly devastating with mortality reported between 10 and 20 ARDS remains a common cause of post injury morbidity and mortality. Many conventional therapies for ARDS are not readily employable in the deployed environment. ARDS is defined as respiratory failure with decreased lung compliance and can be classified by severity according to the Berlin definition. Affects 26-33 of all critically injured combatants with mortality of 15-30. This study seeks to determine mortality risk factors and predictive patterns with ARDS in the combat wounded.
