Abstract:

This thesis investigates the issue of overstays, or individuals who remain in the United States after the legal length of admission has expired, and asks, How can the U.S. government develop a policy to reduce the number of people who overstay their legal length of admission A review of government reports, congressional testimony, agency documentation, and the relevant laws was conducted to shed light on this persistent and growing issue. This thesis explored the lack of information, resources, and consistency in dealing with overstays within the nations immigration system. The thesis proposes two recommendations to address this issue the first, which assumes no additional resources or support, and a second, more ambitious, one that requires changes in public perception, enforcement, and legislation.
