A portable, real-time, in-situ detection system with nanometer resolution lays the groundwork to investigate the properties and kinetic behaviors of materials and structures as well as phenomena at nano-scale. It will enable a new class of ultra-sensitive and low-power sensors for biochemical warfare defense, environmental monitoring, clinical diagnostics, and pharmaceutical studies. This project will utilize ultra-high-quality whispering-gallery-mode optical resonators to form an ultra-sensitive, real-time, in-situ sensing platform. Various sensing mechanisms will be explored in these optical structures.
