Purpose To evaluate the effects of hydroxocobalamin HOC in post cardiac arrest swine 24-72hrs post injury global and microscopic neurohistology. Methods Swine 22-32kg were anesthetized, intubated and instrumented for continuous monitoring. Ventricular fibrillation VF was induced followed by BLS and ACLS until return of spontaneous circulation ROSC. Monitored for 60 mins post ROSC and then recovered and observed for 72hrs. After observation period, animals were euthanized and brains immediately removed and placed in 10 NBF for fixation. Results The study was not completed, closed due to triennial renewal date. Based on the work that was done, an 8 minute cardiac arrest model was survivable and produced rare neuornal necrosis in the CA1 area of the hippocampus per staff pathologist. Conclusions After much discussion between the study team and collaborators, moving forward in the next phase, the primary focus will be the neurological function of the treated animal versus the control animals in a 8 minute cardiac arrest model.
